TEACHER TRAINING VIDEOS
These videos were created for teachers to help them to incorporate technology into their teaching. There are many videos on topics from 'using Twitter' to 'Mind Mapping' to 'PowerPoint' and many others. Just click on a link below and a video will open and take you through how to use that technology. The videos are all by Russell Stannard.

Russell Stannard is a principal lecturer in Multimedia/ICT at the University of Westminster as well as the course leader in the MSc in Interactive Multimedia . He has a regular column in the English Teaching Professional called Webwatcher where he writes about technology and language teaching. The column has been running for 7 years. The ELT Professional has begun to offer free on-line examples of Russell's articles from Webwatcher.
He has worked in Spain, China, Greece and the UK and was the Director of Studies of the International House Centre in Seville Spain for 9 years and a teacher trainer with the Spanish government.

Russell also teaches on courses in ICT and English for Academic Purposes as well as running the Media and Technology module on the MA TESOL at the University of Westminster.

HOW COULD YOU USE THESE VIDEOS?

Videos which describe how to do something are useful for several reasons:

Firstly, and most obviously, you can use them when teaching your own subject, and your students could watch them in their own time.
Secondly they could be used to help with teaching about planning. You can discuss how teachers need to break down tasks and activities into simple steps and activities for learners, then link in to the often difficult subject of writing objectives or learning outcomes. Ask individuals or groups to write objectives for 'making a cup of tea' or 'painting a wall' then compare their results with the videos.

BASICS

There isn't a lot of point starting to use sophisticated web tools and online gadgets unless you are reasonably confident with the basics in terms of technology and teaching. Below are a selection of good sources of online help, tutorials and advice about the basics of technology.

GOLDEN RULES However enthusiastic or sceptical you may be about using technology in your teaching, always: . Make sure you and your students have the IT skills needed to carry out any task or activity Make sure using technology is appropriate and relevant All the other aspects of your teaching need to be just as carefully and thoroughly prepared as usual Make sure you have the equipment where and when you need it, and technical support available Always have a plan B .. at some stage, if it can go wrong, it will! USING THE INTERNET WEBWISE is the BBC's guide to using the internet, and is as good a place to start as any if you are not confident about using the world wide web. Webwise includes 'Guides' where well-known TV presenters explain some of the most important tools and techniques, including 'Getting Online'; 'Sharing Online' and 'Watching TV online' There is an online course where you can learn how to use the internet step by step. Ask Bruce enables you to ask questions online, and search for answers to questions asked previously by others.	USING POWERPOINT WORLD OF TEACHING is a large selection of PowerPoint presentations, which are freelt available for anyone to use, so you don't even have to be able to creat a presentation" As always, check before you use! Using POWERPOINT IN THE CLASSROOM is an eight-unit tutorial showing teachers how to to use PowerPoint. It includes the basics on using PowerPoint's toolbars, laying out information, saving, moving information to the place you'll be presenting it - and more. OTHER PRACTICAL ICT SKILLS PROMOTING E-LEARNING (see also in the e-learning section below) contains many practical activities which will help teachers build their ICT skills.
SEARCHING THE INTERNET Bare Bones 101 - a comprehensive tutorial on searching the web. Finding Information on the Internet: A Tutorial Excellent introduction to Web searching basics; from the University of California, Berkeley Teaching Library's Internet Workshops series. INTERNET IMAGE SEARCHING is another very useful tutorial from Intute which promises to teach you how to use the Internet to find copyright cleared images for your work, quickly and efficiently?	INFORMATION SKILLS INTUTE: VIRTUAL TRAINING SUITE provides free Internet tutorials to help you learn how to get the best from the Web for your education and research. The tutorials are written and updated by a national team of subject specialists based in universities and colleges across the UK. There are also additional tutorials including INTERNET DETECTIVE, which is a free Internet tutorial to learn to discern the good, the bad and the ugly for your online research
E-LEARNING 1 E-JOURNEY ON E-LEARNING Describes itself as follows - 'This e-journey is a free guide to e-learning written by Derek Stockley. E-learning is explained, the major fields of expertise are explored, gurus and experts are listed and a comprehensive range of links is provided. It is designed to provide general information and specific design tips. This online training course/program assumes a basic knowledge of how the internet operates, however the e-learning content is suitable for both the novice and experienced user. It is an example of computer based training. Web education should be fun. Enjoy!' The Practical guide to e-learning for industry is a set of information screens, checklists and links that will help any business, large or small, to get started in e-learning, or to improve existing e-learning programs. The production of the Practical guide to e-learning for industry (Practical guide) is part of the Industry Engagement Project of the Australian Flexible Learning Framework. An excellent resource which focusses on technology and skills for life, but is useful for e-learning staff development in other areas too. Itslife live is a new community website, produced by Jim Crawley from Bath Spa University, which will work in conjunction with the already well known Itslife web site.

This new site will focus two key areas:

How developments in technology and pedagogy combine to scaffold personal learning. Thomas March Abstract The WebQuest was launched in 1995 to scaffold advanced cognition by integrating the “ill-structured” nature of the World Wide Web with a process that guides novices through decisions and experiences that characterize experts’ behaviors. Recently, the Web has morphed into Web 2.0 with its social networking sites, blogs, wikis and podcasts. Given this richness, revisiting WebQuests is in order. This paper reviews the critical attributes of true WebQuests and reviews recent research in thinking routines and intrinsic motivation to recommend new paths for WebQuests that could scaffold student use of Web 2.0 environments, enabling a shift toward authentic personal learning. Evidence for E-learning Policy VANESSA PITTARD British Educational Communications and Technology Agency, Coventry, United Kingdom Abstract: E-learning is becoming an increasingly mainstream feature of educational delivery. The launch of a national e-learning strategy in England signals the Government's commitment to maximising the potential benefits of investment in information and communications technology (ICT). The vision for e-learning set out in this strategy is ambitious. At this time, research has the potential to inform related decisions about e-learning at many levels, though achieving evidence-informed policy and practice requires meaningful dialogue between researchers and policy makers and practitioners. Robust evidence of the impact and added value of e-learning is at a premium, set within the context of broader educational objectives, like widening participation in learning and raising educational standards. This is not a straightforward exercise, due to the difficulties of researching complex social contexts and interventions. The challenge for researchers is to develop methodologies which both recognise the complexities of e-learning implementation and produce robust measures of impact or added value. Greater understanding is needed of the conditions under which ICT deployment impacts positively on attainment, the relationship between learner needs and e-learning, the effective deployment of staff time, assessment in an e-learning age and e-learning in post-16 education. Educational Technology, January-February 2004 Volume 44, Number 1, pp. 5-27. (Download here - pdf) 'Shrouded in the mists of someone else's vision' - Teachers using learning technology in post compulsory education (Crawley, 2004) This paper presents the view that teachers in Post Compulsory Education (PCE), far from being at the forefront of the e-learning revolution, are often 'shrouded in the mists of someone else's vision' (Le Gallais 2002) and pressured to move in a direction they are not necessarily convinced is the right one. Whilst accepting and endorsing a number of the key elements of such a vision as potentially positive enhancements of a teacher's role and responsibilities, the paper argues that there is a significant, and probably growing, gap between where the vision expects teachers in Post Compulsory Education (PCE) to go, and where a significant proportion of them actually are. Ongoing research by the author, into the views of teachers in PCE on Learning Technology, suggests that many are in reality ill prepared, practically and psychologically, to embrace and utilize e-learning, and often unconvinced of its value in their teaching. NRDC (2007) Effective Practice in using ICT Abstract: The five NRDC Effective Practice Studies explore teaching and learning in reading, writing, numeracy, ESOL and ICT, and they set out to answer two questions: 1. How can teaching and learning literacy, numeracy, ESOL and ICT be improved? and 2. Which factors contribute to successful learning? This study, covering ICT, was the fifth project which was conducted by the Institute of Education, University of London. It differed from the other four in that its first phase was developmental, rather than evaluative; as a consequence, only the second phase of its data-gathering resembled that of the four projects listed above, and its final sample size was smaller. The research began in July 2003 and was completed in March 2005. In total, 150 students took part in the evaluation phase of the study, and 80 completed both pre- and post-tests (after 40 hours of class time). Each classroom was observed four times, and a sample of learners was observed to identify how they carried out the tasks assigned to them. (2006) Stephen Machin; Sandra McNally; Olmo Silva Abstract: The paper examines whether a considerable increase in ICT investment has made any difference to educational standards. More specifically, it evaluates whether changes in ICT investment had any causal impact on changes in educational outcomes in English schools over the period from 1999 to 2003. Data were drawn from administrative data (at the level of Local Education Authority) over the period from 1999 to 2003. Data from the "ICT Survey of Schools in England", is also used to show how this extra funding translated into ICT use in schools in 2000 and 2003.
